about

One Or Two Pianos collects duo performances recorded at these pianists' favourite London venues: Iklectik and Café Oto. Either one or two pianos are featured because on some tracks, one of the pair plays toys and other objects. The result is a loosely-organised and discursive set of long and short improvisations. They express Steve Beresford's title Pianos Toys Music and Noise, which was applied to a series of performances (though with Piano in the singular) and then to our book of conversations. The phrase sums up his improvising career (though the toys have sometimes made music and the pianos have sometimes made noise.)

This rubrik also sums up Pat Thomas' career, which is not surprising as Steve acted as a kind of unwitting mentor to Pat sometime during the previous century. Pat's work has diverged from Steve's in offering interpretations of jazz compositions such as those by Duke Ellington. Steve claims (I suspect wrongly) that he's not up to such sonic essays in the jazz tradition. But he's a committed jazz fan, and some of the track titles reflect his pianistic heroes: Misha (Mengelberg), Cecil (Taylor), Paul (Bley) and Fred (van Hove). Both musicians – like all great artists – are adepts at burying and then expanding upon their musical influences. The result is a rich sonic stew of musical delights - Andy Hamilton

ps Special guest Tasos Stamou is featured in a brief duet with Steve Beresford to close the album.
